PRIVACY NOTICE TO MICHIGAN RURAL REHABILITATION CORPORATION BORROWERS Important Information Regarding the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act
The purpose of Title V of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act is to ensure financial institution’s respect of their customers and protect the security and confidentiality of their customer’s non-public personal information.
The final rules require that all financial institutions share their privacy policies with consumers only if they intend to provide the consumers non-public personal information to non-affiliated third parties. Financial institutions must provide their customers with a process for “opting out”, which means customers can say that they do not want the financial institution to share the customer’s “non-public information” with non-affiliated third parties. The final rules became effective November 13, 2000.
The exception to the “opt-out” final rules is as follows: Customers at institutions utilizing third party servicers cannot opt out of information being shared with the servicer. For student lending this means the borrower cannot choose to opt out of information being shared with any entity that must have the information in order to perform routine servicing of the loan. For example: schools, credit bureaus, the guarantor of the loan, NSLDS, etc.
